In the early 50’s, businessmen and women and industry leaders in Lexington and Thomasville were concerned about the number of solicitations they and their employees received. Their concerns were expressed in Chamber of Commerce meetings. Chamber officials investigated the possibility of forming a “United Fund.” With direction from larger communities already attracted to the idea, a combined effort began separately in the two communities. In 1993, a Human Service Needs Assessment of Davidson County was conducted. The existence of the two United Way organizations in the county proved to be the largest duplication of services in the study. It was recommended that a task force examine the feasibility of a countywide United Way. The United Way of Davidson County was established in late 1993 and the existing organizations were dissolved.
